If you have a tired bathroom that needs redecorating, consider adding or replacing lighting fixtures which will not only brighten a dull bathroom up, but can also add a great deal of character to it. Adding new light fixtures is also considerably less expensive than renovating the entire bathroom, yet achieves rewarding results, and that’s an important option in a struggling economy.

New lighting in an old bathroom can transform it into a new and happy area. Since families spend a great deal of time grooming in a bathroom, it is essential to install proper lighting for the numerous tasks which are carried out there. One overhead lighting unit generally is not sufficient for proper lighting.

The first area of importance is the mirror or vanity area. This is where most of the grooming is done and, therefore, needs to be supplied with adequate lighting for close-up observance. A single overhead light is not a good source for a vanity mirror. Either it doesn’t illuminate the face well enough, or it will cast shadows on certain areas and cause eye strain.

The best approach is to provide light sources from each side of the mirror which provide even light for the entire face. If you notice, most vanities have lights running up the sides of the mirror in order to provide this balance. Wall sconces, or two or three recessed puck lights, installed into the walls on either side are great choices for this. Just make sure the puck lights are the kind that swivel so you can angle them towards the face.

Recessed lights are also good to use over the tub, shower and toilet areas, especially if you install the pivotal designs. They highlight well the details of tile and wallpaper, and they cast light directly onto the areas needed. When using light fixtures in a shower stall, make sure you purchase units that are sealed and designed for wet conditions.

For nighttime, a good idea is to utilize either a lighted entrance switch, or run a strip of low voltage LED light strips along the baseboard. These will provide adequate light for middle of the night bathroom runs without having to endure exposure to full light. You can even run the LED strips down the hallway so everyone can easily make their way to and from late at night.

Using new light fixtures is a great way to dramatically transform the look and feel of a bathroom without spending an excessive amount of money on fully renovating it. And, with the large selection of designs and models on the market, it’s a breeze to find just the right units to accentuate your particular taste.
